POST TITLE:                                 Support Assistant – Additional Needs

GRADE:                                         N4

HOURS:                                        37 hours per week, term-time + 3 Call Days

RESPONSIBLE TO:                     Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral) and SENDCo

In all aspects of the post s/he must implement faithfully and effectively the Aims and Policies of this Roman Catholic school and work collaboratively to ensure that the Christian ethos, standards of academic excellence and good behaviour are maintained and strengthened.

The following list is typical of the level of duties the post holder would be expected to perform.  It is not necessarily exhaustive, and other duties of a similar type and level may be required from time to time.

General

Supporting the teacher in the general management of the classroom.

Undertaking activities, as directed by the teacher, with individuals or small groups of students.                                                                      3                     Providing clerical/admin support, e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, collection of money, administer coursework and exams

Supervising groups of students alone and participating in general activities including giving sensitive support and intervention in                                children’s play.

Undertaking routine invigilation and marking.

Classroom Organisation

To be responsible for the organisation, classroom maintenance, setting out, clearing away and care of resources to create a purposeful                       and attractive learning environment.

Assisting in the preparation, maintenance and repair of books, apparatus and equipment, to include cataloguing and stocktaking of all resources.

Preparing students’ work for/and display in the classroom and around the school.

Demonstrating creativity in assisting with the practical resourcing of the classroom.

Resourcing for small group intervention in collaboration with the SENDCo.

Student Support

Working with students directly on curriculum related tasks under the direction of the teacher.

Assisting in the delivery of all aspects of support to students including assessment, recording and reporting procedures and maintenance of Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) and teacher overviews under the guidance of the SENDCo.

Giving relevant feedback to the teacher regarding the social, emotional and physical needs of students thus offering the teacher support in the classroom.

Assisting with monitoring and evaluating the learning environment provided for the students and use of this evaluation to help make necessary changes and developments within the classroom.

The moving of secondary age students who have physical support needs, to ensure that they have full access to the curriculum and can cope with daily life in a large school.

Following the school policy documents and schemes of work to keep updated with school and National Curriculum documentation.

Welfare and other duties

Under teacher overall control, accepting shared responsibility for the creation of a safe environment for students within and outside the classroom.

Assisting in the supervision of students particularly at break periods and the beginning and end of sessions.

Providing of general care and welfare by responding appropriately to the social, emotional and physical needs of students. This might include attending to sick or injured students, taking sick students home and investigating reasons for absence.

Delivering, or assisting in the support of, intimate student personal care with appropriate training and equipment.

The provision of personal care and welfare responding appropriately to the physical, social, emotional and educational needs of the student. This would include cleaning and re-dressing students who had soiled themselves.

Following appropriate training, administer medication to students, in accordance with the school’s policy and procedures

Promote and implement the School’s equal opportunities policies in all aspects of employment and service delivery
